Sextants / Octants / Stadimeters / Optical devices:
Sextant: instrument used to measure the angle between any two visible objects, namely an astronomical object
and the horizon to aid in celestial navigation.  The frame is shaped like a sector, or 1/6th of a circle.
Octant or quadrant: smaller sextant using a 1/8th or 1/4 of a circle for a frame
Stadimeter: used to estimate the range of an object of known height; like setants, stadimeters use mirrors to measure
angles between two objects
